As part of the NATIONAL AUTONOMOUS UNIVERSITY OF MEXICO WEBINAR SERIES ‘SOUTH-SOUTH DIALOGUES’, I am convening a roundtable, entitled PRESENT AND IMMINENT: CRISES AND COMPLEXITY IN MEXICO AND SOUTH AFRICA DATE: Tuesday, February 23, 2020TIME: 9 am (Mexico City), 5 pm (Johannesburg) Wednesday 24, 2 am (Melbourne)This roundtable will focus on contemporary and emerging crises in the two countries. Both Mexico and South Africa face multiple biological, ecological and economic problems, as reflected by biodiversity loss, water, food and energy crises, the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases, and new infections including COVID-19. Pressures from continued urbanisation, migration, and unemployment, partly due to such challenges, contribute to local anxiety, violence and systemic inequality. We will focus on two key issues -- migration and climate change -- with two speakers each from University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Speakers are: Cristina Oehmichen BazánInstitute of Anthropological Research, UNAM, Mexico; Paola Velasco Santos, Institute of Anthropological Research, UNAM, Mexico; Jo Vearey, African Centre for Migration and Society, Wits, and Khangelani Moyo, Global Change Institute, Wits. You can participate in this by joining the seminar through UNAM-SOUTH AFRICA's Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CEMSUDAFRICA">https://www.facebook.com/CEMSUDAFRICA
