About Me:
I am a medical/educational anthropologist. My career has been dedicated to the evolution of sustainable community based research institutes that carry out independent, multi-funded collaborative research programs with limited-resource communities in the United States and elsewhere. I was a co-founder of the Hispanic Health Council, Hartford, CT., and the founding director of the Institute for Community Research, Hartford, CT. a multimillion dollar NIH/CDC/SAMHSA funded organization, from 1987 - 2004 at which point I stepped aside to become full time senior scientist. My research has covered the developmental spectrum from infants to older adults, and a variety of different topics related to health and well being. I am especially committed to multilevel intervention research with sustainable potential through community and institutional/governmental mechanisms. I've worked for the past more than a decade with two established governmental institutions in India, to conduct NIH funded research and capacity building training in the areas of alcohol and HIV and smokeless tobacco and reproductive health. My publications include the Ethnographer's Toolkit editions 1 and 2, with Margaret LeCompte. I've been president of the CAE and SfAA, board member of SfAA and AAA, remain active in these organizations and have a presence in APHA and other associations.
