  • Hi Lisa:

We have some things in common.  I am a MSW from Wayne State working in Detroit.  I am from Ecuador.   I am also a licensed Art Therapist and interested in Hawaian culture.

My email is: jeanettevillagomez@gmail.com.  By the way I live close to the DIA.

Hope to hear from you soon.

    Jeanett V.

  • Hi Lisa,

Yes, I have an MSW and practiced for several years as a clinical social worker before starting my PhD program in anthropology. It was a career shift for me, as I'd never studied anthropology before, but in some ways it seems like a natural progression. It means, however that I have a dual professional identity, even if I am not a practicing clinician, and I borrow language and concepts (even if I also critique some of those concepts) from social work and psychology. There will always be some resistance to research of an interdisciplinary nature, but I have had a lot of good support from my committee and other faculty in my department, and so it's working out for me. I'm not sure I would have planned things out this way from the beginning; it's a lot of years of education, but I have no regrets. Are you planning a macro or clinical major?
