  • Ola Lisa. I read about that particular announcement in Japan. Maybe it is just me. The scorn/pity/regret comment isn't something I've heard in academia, but from non-academics in day to day interactions. Mainly older folks. Although people my own age and younger wax poetic about how great it is to have kids (even as they're screaming at them stop smearing chocolate all over the wall).

    A good friend of mine, a biologist, wrote me to say that his dad has started in on him with the "your going to regret not having kids earlier" thing. My friend is 31. It is getting better, but I think a lot of Americans still see having at least one kid proving that you are normal. YMMD

    Your work in France sounds pretty interesting. Do you get to travel?
