About Me:
I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of North Dakota. I will be working with the Xukuru indigenous tribe in Brazil this year during my developmental leave, and have created a petition that is posted on "petitiononline.com" that addresses the grave and serious human rights abuses occurring to the Xukuru, and would like to ask for your help.
Here is the web page for my online petition - cut and past into your browser:
http://www.petitiononline.com/Xucuru/petition.html
Please read the information in the petition on the history of human rights abuses against the Xukuru and the current legal cases against them, and then read through the petition. Below are two YouTube videos about the Xukuru:
Xicão Xukuru
Xukuru: A coragem em cima do medo – Courage in the Face of Fear
If you can sign the petition, you will be assisting the cause of social justice for Brazil's indigenous peoples; the Xukuru tribe is a leader in the struggle for indigenous human rights and land re-demarcation in Brazil.
The more signatures we can get internationally, particularly from the academic community in the US, the more impact our work will have in securing justice and dignity for the Xukuru, and indirectly, for indigenous peoples the world over.
• Please pass this petition along to friends, and ask if they would sign it.
• If any of you belong to a list serve on human rights, please consider sending out the URL for this petition to your members and encourage them to sign.
I will be taking your signatures to the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights of the Organization of American States in Brasilia, Brazil, and if possible to the United Nations.
Thank you all for taking time to read through this petition. Your support is much appreciated!
Respectfully,
Marcia Mikulak
