Gideon Lasco delivers the the Annual Corazon B. Lamug Lecture -- The Department of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, UP Los Baños.

Now more than ever before, at a time of medical crisis, we see how the politics of health holds profound consequences for people’s lives and livelihoods. This presentation uses the framework of ‘medical populism’ (Lasco and Curato 2019) to make sense of the COVID-19 pandemic, using illustrative examples from the Philippines - and reflects on the role of the social sciences in responding to this political style that thrives on division, simplification, and spectacle.
