Brief Bio - Dr. Mohammad Zaman, Advisor – Social/Resettlement
Mohammad Zaman, PhD (Manitoba 1988) lives in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. He has worked for over 30 years as an international consultant with the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank in many countries in Asia and Africa. Dr. Zaman has authored/edited several books on resettlement and development. He is currently advisory professor, National Research Center for Resettlement, Hohai University, Nanjing, China. He is also a Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology, and an Honorary Advisor to the Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad.
Dr. Zaman is a well reputed op-ed columnist and a public scholar. He has published over 50 op-eds on topics of public interest such as the Rohingya refugee crisis, climate change and displacement, resettlement and development, ethnic and religious conflicts, refugee issues in Assam, and very recently about the Covid-19 pandemic in English dailies in Bangladesh and Canada. Many of the op-eds have been reprinted in newspapers across the Asia region.
Dr. Zaman is widely published in peer reviewed journals in anthropology and development studies. He edited books which include Development-Induced Displacement and Resettlement in Bangladesh: Case Studies and Practices (co-editor Hafiza Khatun), NY: Nova Publishers, 2018, two editions (First edition 2016; revised and expanded Second edition in paperback 2019); and Living on the Edge: Char Dwellers in Bangladesh (co-editor Mustafa Alam), soon to come out by the international Springer publishing house (May-June 2021). Recently, Dr. Zaman also signed a publication contract with Routledge Publishers (London, UK) for his edited book (co-editors Reshmy Nair and Shi Guoqing) tentatively titled Resettlement in Asian Countries: Legislation, Administration and Struggles for Rights.
