Currently Mwanza, Tanzania & London, UK
About Me:
I am a Medical Anthropologist with 8 years experience in Tanzania and just in the process of completing my PhD researching perceptions of risk in NW Tanzania using a combination of
ethnographic and more structured methodological approaches. This
qualitative research is informed by the HIV pandemic and the fact that changes in reported knowledge do not/rarely translate to behaviour changes. The project examines HIV within the context of other risks that people prioritise in their daily lives, exploring how interpretations of these are constructed through local (emic)understandings of prevalent discourses suchn as exposure to
modernity, social position, agency etc and how such interpretations affect an individual's risk perceptions and consequently their risk taking or risk-avertive behaviour.
In a couple of months I'll be moving to Malawi to combine phd research with work experience, looking at communication of science and how engagement in medical research affects the wider social context such as knowledge construction, social relations, treatment seeking behaviour etc.
